Our purpose

At Kensington, across our teams and functions, we all work to deliver a single-minded purpose:

We are Passionate People Helping Extra-Ordinary People Own Homes When Other Lenders Don’t.
What we do

On Wednesday 13th December 1995, Kensington completed its first loan and pioneered a new approach to lending to customers overlooked by mainstream lenders. Nearly 25 years later, we’re the UK’s leading residential specialist mortgage lender,* with a mortgage book of over £5bn, and we’re still blazing a trail offering people the chance to get a mortgage.

Where high street lenders see black and white, we’ve always seen the shades in between. We don’t just rely on what the computer says, we use real people to understand the real circumstances behind what’s written on a mortgage application form. Our innovative use of data driven by our in-house analytical tool Vector, combined with human expertise and flexible lending criteria is what we call our ‘head and heart’ approach. It comes from an understanding that no two people are the same. That a self-employed builder will have different circumstances to a contract worker, a kitchen table entrepreneur, someone who’s over 55 or who has a small blip on their credit file.

The way we live today means that extra-ordinary circumstances are rapidly becoming ordinary and that’s why we’re here, to provide mortgages to a broader range of people than the high street lenders.

HR Advisor
Having started with the company as an Administrator, Kensington has supported me in qualifying and progressing to a HR Advisor. I act as the first point of contact for our employees and external customers, and work with all areas of the business on a daily basis. Working in HR at Kensington is a rewarding experience, and we are encouraged to be confident and brave to deliver great customer service for our internal and external customers.
Servicing Team Manager
I’ve progressed from Agent to Team Manager and now manage a team within Customer Services. We handle any requests or queries our customers may have on their mortgage accounts. Each day, I get to work with and help a broad range of customers and colleagues. No two days are the same which enables me to learn new skills to develop myself and my team.
Telephone Account Development Manager
I’m the first point of contact for mortgage brokers with initial queries for new business. I agree whether it’s a good business case for Kensington and assist brokers in getting their client’s business to us. What’s rewarding about my role is seeing the business grow each month, the team I work with and happy brokers when their clients have been accepted for a mortgage with us.
Project Administrator
I work with in Group change and liaise with colleagues across the business to monitor and track the progress of a project. I love the interaction I have with different people and functions with in the business and my colleagues have really helped me to develop. I’ve been lucky to work with some very talented people who I’ve learnt a lot from.
Compliance Monitoring Officer
My job is to ensure that all relevant legislation, regulation and policies are adhered to and then I report back to our Executive Committee. The aspect of my job that’s most rewarding is being able to provide guidance to the business to ensure that our customers are treated fairly. What do I like best about Kensington? The people and friendly, collaborative culture across the business.
Business Analyst
I work in Group Change as part of a Project Team. My role is to understand the requirements of the business and support them to develop and deploy the changes needed to meet these. What I love most about my role is that I am able to work with other areas of the business, learn what they do and find solutions to their problems. It’s a great feeling when I am able to help improve a process and make the business run more efficiently.

Our brand

In 2018, we redefined what our brand stood for: a ‘head and heart’ lender who uses expertise and empathy to help our intermediary partners help their clients get the mortgages they need. To complement our new brand positioning, we updated our visual identity introducing a new typeface to represent the ‘head’ driven by data expertise, and vibrant, fresh colours to represent the empathetic 'heart'. Our new identity is about making us appeal not just to our existing customers but to the new ones we want to attract in the future.

Our brand positioning drives everything we do, not just for our customers and broker partners but for our employees too. ‘Head and Heart’ is the way we deliver our purpose and informs how we bring our values to life. When we come to work each day, we’re reminded of how our purpose, brand and values all work together across everything we do.

Mental health is a condition that can often be missed as it’s not always obvious when someone is suffering. We’re committed to doing what we can to help change the conversation around mental health so that we all feel safe to speak up if we’re suffering. That’s why we’re proud to work with Mind, the mental health charity as our 2019 Charity Partner.

Mind wants to make sure no one has to face a mental health problem alone. They provide advice and support to anyone facing a mental health problem, as well as campaigning to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding.

We value our people because of what they offer and contribute. We aim to attract the best and use people’s talents effectively whilst recognising, understanding and valuing the differences that exist between us all.

We recruit individuals based on their experience and ability, ensuring that our criteria for both recruitment and promotion is fair and transparent.

We are an equal opportunities employer, meaning that we treat everyone fairly, starting from the recruitment stage and continuing throughout your career with us.

We work to ensure we have an inclusive environment in which opportunities and recognition are equally accessible to all employees; regardless of gender, but also considering factors such as race, disability, age, sexual orientation, religion, work pattern. We believe in fairness, equality and inclusion and are committed to reducing our gender pay gap.

Modern Slavery is defined within the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and it includes offences such as Slavery, Servitude and Forced or Compulsory Labour and Human Trafficking.
We, as a business, take our responsibilities as an employer and a corporate citizen seriously; this includes ensuring that the welfare and wellbeing of our employees and those working on our behalf are given appropriate levels of attention. We are subsequently committed to combatting modern slavery activities in our organisation and also minimising modern slavery risks across our supply chain. We are proud of the steps we have taken so far, and continue to take to ensure that our businesses continue to operate ethically and with integrity.
To understand how we have achieved this, view our Modern Slavery Statement here.

In preparation for the re-opening of our Maidenhead office, Ascot House, and in line with Government guidelines, we have completed a risk assessment of the office and we are now working through the actions which will ensure the safety and welfare of everyone who uses the building.

Guidance and training will be provided to those employees who have been identified to return to the office on the 6 July, and the training must be completed before you return to the office. Subject to no changes in Government advice, we will plan for more employees to return to the office during August and September, and will continue to provide training and updated guidance before your return.

Facilities in the office will be limited and strict social distancing measures will be employed throughout the office. For example, desks and equipment cannot be shared and will be allocated to each employee, the restaurant will be closed, and all meetings will need to be held virtually. Increased cleaning will take place in the office and each employee will be provided personal safety kits. Further measures will be in place and will be covered in the guidance and training.

You can read the full risk assessment here.
